Guy K. Sligar 1941-2011 Perhaps the best measure of a charmed life is depth of the love one’s family feels for you. On March 11 Guy K. Sligar went to be with his Lord and Savior after a 3 year battle with cancer leaving behind a family with just such immeasurable love. Born to Freda and Guy Sligar on May 4th 1941, he began a life that would have him wear many hats and impact countless lives. Attending both Washington State University and EWU his education afforded him many opportunities. Silo builder for his Father, concrete finisher, welder, meat cutter, process server and salesman for Chipman United describes what he did to provide for his family but only partially conveys who he really was. Survived by his wife Darlene, who cared for him so lovingly during these last few years, Guy was the true patriarch of a large and diverse family along with her. He led by example, was seemingly always cheerful and although never truly judgmental his opinion was frequently sought to guide his friends and children through though times. The nickname “Boppa” was given to him by his first grandchild early on and came to be a common way of referring to him by many suggesting that even the youngest could see his strength. He made little distinction on how you came to be a member of his family: Brother-in-laws were brothers, son-in laws where sons, daughter-in-laws were simply daughters. Even with him marrying more than once there was no differentiation between his children and step children. All experienced his selflessness and generosity at some time be it in the form of a simple birthday call or rushing to your side in times of need. He shared his favorite places willingly; the most cherished being his lake place on Long Lake surrounded by friends and family. There memories where created that will last forever. Guy enjoyed motorsports, motorcycling both dirt and road biking, jet skiing and boating. In addition, he gave back to the community in many ways. His time working with the Lilac Association including a term as its President was a fitting endeavor for such an altruistic and gregarious soul such as Guy’s. A past president of Spokane Executive Association he is known to many in the Pacific Northwest. His patriotism was clear and shown by being an Ombudsman for Fairchild Air Force base helping families left behind in time of deployment. As well as being a past president of Winter Knights, member of Armed Services committee and the Spokane Chamber. In addition to his wife Darlene and daughters Darla, Roxanne, Shauna and Lynette. Guy is survived by his two sisters: Gale and her husband Chuck O’Connor and Carol and her husband Jim Rockstrom: two sons Darrin and Todd : three daughters Tawnie, Becky, Stacy; as well and numerous grand children, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. All are saddened by his passing but will feel the lasting enrichment that came with knowing him. We are better in knowing that such a wonderful person existed and truly he left the world a better place. A memorial in his honor will be held this summer. The date and location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the American Cancer Association.
