Jack passed away peacefully on Sunday April 17, 2011. He was born in Seattle to parents Ethyl and Paul Saad on August 15th, 1921. Jack grew up in Seattle and graduated from Lakeside High School in 1939. He attended Whitman College, graduating in 1946. Jack was president of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and formed many lifelong friendships at Whitman. His college career was interrupted by WW II, where he served as a Naval Aviator and flight instructor. He kept his pilot's license current and flew for many years. Jack met Phyllis Lindquist at Whitman and they married in 1943. The couple moved to Seattle and sons, Paul and Jack, soon followed. The family moved to Spokane in 1948 where Jack took over the family shoe business, which had started in 1914. In Spokane Jack quickly became involved in the downtown community. He was Retailer of the year in 1975 and was president of the Retail Trade Bureau in 1977. Jack changed careers in the late 60's becoming a stock broker with Harris Upham and later working with Horton, Geibb, and O'Rourke. Jack was a member of the Prosperity Club, Kiwanis, and the finance committee at St. Stevens Episcopal church. Jack often reached out to others and with several friends helped support Reverend Hamp's kids' summer camp. Jack married Martha Lee Redmond in 1977. The two moved into retirement, spending their summers at Hayden Lake and winters traveling to Carmel, Palm Desert, New Zealand, and the Mediter- ranean, always with friends. In retirement Jack continued to be a passionate supporter of downtown Spokane and remained active in city politics. Always quick with a smile and a positive thought, Jack was a kind, considerate, and thoughtful man. He was fair and respectful to everyone. It seemed as if he knew everyone everywhere he went and they were all friends. Jack is survived by his wife, Martha Lee, his sons Jack, Paul, (Mary), and his granddaughters, Stephanie Cuthbertson, (Cory) and Meagan Appleby, (Tom). A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2 PM Friday May 6th at Manito Country Club, 5303 South Hatch Road, Spokane, WA 99223, (509) 448-2045.
