LaPLANT, Robert J. Our wonderful dad, Robert J. LaPlant, passed away on Monday, December 28, at the age of 94, in the same way he lived his life, with dignity and grace. Bob was born on March 6, 1921 to Albert J. and Lila LaPlant in Colville, WA. He graduated from Colville High School in 1939 and attended Marin Junior College in San Rafael, CA. Bob enlisted in the US Navy in 1943, serving in the South Pacific during World War II on the USS Bryant. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his survival of a horrific attack on his ship where he served in the control room. Only two in the control room survived this deadly attack. Bob was a very proud Veteran and American. Upon returning from the war, Bob attended North Idaho Junior College studying to become a jeweler. Bob would meet his wife, Phyllis Petersen, upon his return to Colville, where Phyllis was a teacher. They were married in 1949 raising their three daughters, Lynda, Melanie and Lisa in Colville. He and Phyllis owned LaPlant Jewelers in downtown Colville for 36 years. Both Bob and Phyllis created a legacy of commitment to their customers throughout the region. Upon selling their business in 1980, they moved to Spokane. Throughout Bob's life he was involved in numerous service organizations, always believing in giving back to his community. He began volunteering with the Colville Fire Department in 1946, serving as Fire Chief for many years beginning in 1963. He was actively involved in the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and many other volunteer activities in Colville. He carried on his community service in Spokane, actively participating in such organizations as Lions and Meals on Wheels. Bob lived his life as a true example of giving to others. Bob is proudly survived by his children: Lynda Neilson, Melanie (Robert) Dressel, Lisa (Paul) Dumais; his grandchildren: Amy and Amanda, Robert and Brent, Bryce and Trevor; as well as five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; and his brothers, William and Jack. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday, January 8th between the hours of 10:00 am and 8:00 pm, at Riplinger Funeral Home, N. 4305 Division, Spokane, WA. Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 10:00 am, at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, 7200 N. Wall, Spokane, WA, with Pastor Shari Monson officiating. Entombment will follow services. Memorials may be made to Lions International, local Meals on Wheels, or a local Veteran's Service Organization in Bob's name.
