Edith Geisel Huckaba (Age 93) of Spokane passed away peacefully on Monday, June 27, at the North Spokane Hospice House. Edith was born on September 23, 1922 in Cologne, Germany to Albert and Julie (Keller) Geisel and lived in Germany until trouble began for Jewish students. She left Germany for Peru in 1939. She finished schooling in Lima, Peru and worked as a secretary and translator and served at Lima’s USO. It was there she met Sergeant Allen Huckaba, a U.S. Marine stationed in Lima during World War II. They courted in Lima, and following the close of the war, they were married in 1945 in Miami, Florida. They lived in Missoula, Montana from 1945 through 1951, moved to Spokane in 1951, and eventually moved to Green Bluff in 1958. Allen passed away in 2008. They were married for 63 years. She is survived by her children, James, Beverly, Mark, Terrie, and John, by fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. A son, Stephen, died in 1997. Edith served her community in many volunteer capacities, most recently with the Spokane Union Gospel Mission. She is best remembered by numerous customers for her role in the family’s farm on Green Bluff. A memorial service will be held at RIPLINGER FUNERAL HOME, 4305 N. DIVISION, SPOKANE, WA on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Her interment will be at Peone Cemetery. The family offers their sincere thanks to the North Spokane Hospice House for the excellent care they gave Edith during her stay there.
