Marvin Waldron Jewell

Marvin Waldron Jewell, 94, of Spokane passed away on Friday, June 5, 2009. He was born on August 23, 1914 in Sheldon, ND to Harold S. and Emma M. Jewell, the second of five children. Marvin proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was part of the D-Day Invasion. Before serving in the armed forces, he was a school teacher and basketball coach. He even taught in a one room schoolhouse in North Dakota. He married Ellen M. Hoistad on December 26, 1942 in Church's Ferry, ND. Marvin worked for many years as a Federal Government Clerk with the Railroad Retirement Board from which he retired in 1976. A self-taught carpenter, Marvin enjoyed remodeling houses and doing repair work for many friends and family. There wasn't a repair job that Marvin couldn't handle - he worked at it until he figured it out. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed many hours casting his line from his hand built boat at West Medical Lake often with his brother, Lyle. He and Ellen also enjoyed bowling and camping with their friends. They traveled many a mile in their camper titled the "Jewell Box". Marvin was a member of Salem Lutheran Church for many years where he and Ellen had many lifelong friends. Marvin's wife of 45 years preceded him in death in 1987. He is also preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James and his sister, Lois. Surviving are children, Linda Hintz of Seattle; Ron Jewell and wife, Gail of Old Lyme, CT; Marlene Strecker and husband, Stan of Boise, Idaho; Judy Warr and husband, Mark of Austin, TX; David Jewell and wife, Janine of Spokane; brother, Lyle Jewell of Spokane; sister Gayle Wells and husband, William of King City, OR; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all of the people at the Spokane Veterans Home where Marvin lived for the past year for their constant care and attention. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 1 P.M. at Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway with internment to follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
