Mildred Shaffer, 93, lovingly known as Granny, peacefully entered heaven on June 12, 2009 in Spokane, Washington, surrounded by her family. She was born August 13, 1915 in Venango, Pennsylvania to Margaret Jamison and Titus Shaffer. Granny was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, dedicating her life to her family. Granny had a true servant’s heart, nurturing and teaching three generations. She didn’t want a 9-to-5 job; her life’s work was helping raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Granny loved nature, especially watching the leaves change colors in the fall. She also enjoyed wildlife, always perching by a window to look for birds, deer and squirrels. Letter-writing was another great passion for Granny. She wrote weekly letters to her family and waited expectantly for each day’s mail. Granny was loved immensely and will be sorely missed. She brought so much warmth and happiness to everyone’s lives. “Granny, we will always cherish the time we spent with you. It was such a wonderful blessing to have you in our family. We’ll miss your smiling blue eyes, your spirited personality and all your colorful stories, but we have peace knowing you’re at home with the Lord.” Granny is preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. She is survived by her daughter Gila Broadwater, son-in-law Al; granddaughters Mona Ashbaugh, Brenda Ashbaugh and Laurie Haines; great-grandchildren Jessica Haines; Audrey Sellers, husband Zach; Emalee Haines; Brooke Wingfield, husband J.D.; Adam Haines and David C.A. Frost; and “adopted” granddaughter and dear friend Miriam Frost, and husband David. A Catholic mass was dedicated to Granny’s memory on June 13, 2009 at St. Thomas Moore Parish in Spokane. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the National Stroke Association, 9707 East Easter Lane, Building B, Centennial, Colorado, 80112.
