“ Life is so unpredictable – let’s eat the cookies first” That is how Laurie lived her life. She was born on January 23, 1952 in Williston, ND. A lifelong Spokane resident,she passed away July 20,2009 after a long and valiant battle against cancer. Laurie was a truly kind, loving, generous, caring individual who brought a smile and a sense of warmth to all she touched. A Registered Nurse, she worked in the Health Care industry for over 30 years, the most recent being Group Health NW. She graduated from Mead High School and Spokane Intercollegiate School of Nursing. She loved flowers, gardening, nursing, knitting, shopping, traveling, and, of course, baking cookies. She was extremely devoted to her family and loved family gatherings and reunions. Laurie always saw the positive in all things and all people and lived her life as such. She truly loved her profession and her co-workers. She is survived by her husband Craig; daughter, Chelsea (Joseph) Baker; sons, Luke (Denise ) Canady, Erik ( Krista) Canady, and stepson Philip (Jessica) Masteller; parents, Harold and Eleanor Opsal; sisters,Terry ( John) Carrier, Vicki ( Tom ) Wielgos, Meri Beth ( Lynden ) Skaare; brothers, Chip ( Cheri) Opsal, Craig ( Marian) Opsal; grandchildren, Abigail, Elizabeth, Landon, and Jack; special friend and mother-in-law, Elaine Sullivan; along with numerous aunts, uncles,cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. A special thanks goes out to all her friends and relatives who helped with her care the last few years. Thanks also to her team of Doctors. Mark Bassett, Jay Wittenkeller,John Musa, and their staffs for their care and devotion during her long struggle. Laurie truly loved life and everyone around her and they loved her back as well. Service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 AM at Riplinger Funeral Home, 4305 N. Division.
