Michael Shanks, Jr.(age 93) was born September 29, 1915 in Spokane, WA and entered into rest on August 5, 2009. Michael and Ruby Fry were married in 1940 and made their home in the Spokane Valley, in the home he built for them and where he still was able to live until suffering a stroke at the end of July. His beloved wife, Ruby, preceded him in death in 1996. Mike was a veteran of World War II. He was a 70+-year member of the Carpenters Union of America working for various General Contractors in the Spokane area. At the beginning of his career, he worked on the Grand Coulee Dam. Mike was a quiet, caring man with a great love of his family. His greatest joy was spending time with his family at his lake place on Lake Coeur d’Alene. He also enjoyed traveling with Ruby, spending winters in Arizona, fishing and exploring in Canada and exploring various other states on their journeys. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Orville Kirkevold and Cherlyn and Bob Hubert both of Spokane; grandchildren, Stephanie (Jack) Cooper, Spokane, Amy (Dan) Holmes , East Wenatchee, Gregg Trinkle, Spokane, Aaron Kirkevold, Seattle, Kammy (Paul) Thompson, Spokane, and Loree Carrasco of Spokane; great-grandchildren, Nichole, Megan, Ashley, Derrick, Jenna, Linzee, Kaiden, and Cody; 2 nephews; and 2 nieces. Visitation will be Saturday, August 8 from 9:00AM – 5:00PM at Riplinger Funeral Home 4305 N. Division Spokane, WA. Funeral service will begin at 2:00PM on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 in the Mausoleum Chapel at the Pines Cemetery 1402 S. Pines Road, Spokane Valley, WA.
