Verdie L. Engle Verdie was born in Arkansas on March 10, 1918 to Mont & Lucy Laster. She was the youngest of 3 daughters. She grew up in Missouri and Arkansas and graduated from Clarksville High School, Clarksville, Ark in 1936. She then went to work in Fullbrights Department Store in Clarksville at a job that she loved…being a bookkeeper. In 1944, she met the love of her life, Bobbie Engle while he was attending Naval Radar Maintenance School in Clarksville. In early 1945, she traveled from Arkansas to Berkley, CA to meet Bobbie and they were married on February 17, 1945. After he was discharged from the Navy, they moved to Marlin, WA where they resided for 39 years. Verdie was a stay-at-home wife/mother who enjoyed cooking, baking, raising vegetable and flower gardens, and canning. Verdie was a member of the Canniwai Grange #837, past Juvenile Grange Leader, member of Grange Auxiliary, a member of the Marlin Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for several years, and then more recently, the Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church in Spokane. In 1984, Verdie and Bobbie moved to Spokane where she continued her gardening, as well as helping to run pinochle card parties at several Senior Centers in Spokane. She has for the past 3 years been residing at the Riverview Terrace Retirement Community. Verdie and Bobbie celebrated their 64th anniversary in February this year, but on July 23, Bobbie was called to Heaven. On August 11, Verdie went to be with him. Verdie is survived by daughter Delores (Frank) of Sun City West, AZ; son Alan (Karren) of Dearborn Heights, MI; son Paul (Madonna) of Marietta, GA, 4 grandchildren, Brian Coumont, Dina McVey (Mark), Robert & David Engle, great-granddaughter Makenna McVey, brother-in-law Don Engle of Sandpoint, ID, 2 sisters-in-law (Arberta Engle of Spokane and Sheila Engle of Eugene, OR) and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N Nevada, Spokane, WA 99207. Funeral services will be held at Riplinger Funeral Home, 4305 N. Division St., Spokane, WA. at 10:00 A.M. on Monday August 17.
