Herb entered into God’s memory on August 19, 2009 in Spokane, Washington. Herbert was born on September 3, 19 34 in Norton, Massachusetts to Herbert C. and Lillian Knowles Sr. He graduated from Meredith High School in 1952. Herb entered the service in 1954, serving in the U.S. Air Force Security Service for 10 years. He worked as a technical writer attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, received a Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal. Herb married Beatrice Crisel, his loving wife of 52 years, in 1957. He served in Tripoli, Zwiebrucken Germany, and Munchweiler Germany, his last child was born there. Herb then went into the private sector and was recruited to work in the NASA Space Program. While there, Herb worked as a technical writer as he had done in the security service. He proudly worked on the Apollo moon landing, Apollo 11. Herb would take procedures from the Engineers and translate them into laymen terms for the astronauts. Herb had only a high school education, with a few college courses. Bea says, Herb would read some engineer guide and could even make her understand it. If you really want to know which astronauts had the right stuff, you will just have to ask Bea. Herb went back to the private sector in 1970. Herb retired in 1996. Herb was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witness July 6, 1995. Herb and Bea have been residents of the Spokane area for 7 years. Herb enjoyed many things, among them travel, gardening, reading and devotional Bible reading. He is survived by his loving wife Beatrice; sons, Dennis Knowles of Spokane, and Herbert C. Knowles III of Gulfport, MS; daughter, Dawn Flores of Washington, KS; sisters, Norma Cianfarinni of Worster, MA and Leah McCormick of Moltonboro, NH; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Herb was preceded in death by his son, Michael R. Knowles, earlier this year. Visitation will be Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28 from 9:00 to 5:00 PM at Riplinger Funeral Home 4305 N. Division Spokane, WA. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 29 at the Hays Park Congregation-Hillyard Kingdom Hall 2824 N. Lee St. Spokane , WA with interment following the service at the Peone Prairie Cemetery.
