Richard "Dick" Lee Hubbard

HUBBARD, Richard Lee “Dick” – Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 15, 2017 in Spokane, Washington. He was the only child of Cecil and Ethel Hubbard on July 23, 1930 in Spokane, WA. Richard married Joan Boehmer in 1952 and fathered his daughter, Tarry; and two sons, Todd and Tyler. In 1986, he married Lynne (Missy) Hubbard. He is also survived by his step children, Drew and Carolyn Rhimer; and 12 grand and great grandchildren. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and joined the prestigious Air Force Academy Band in Colorado Springs, Colorado. For over 15 years he was 1st saxophonist, woodwind supervisor, staff arranger and finally band superintendent before he retired in 1973. Richard held a teaching degree as well as degrees in Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Mathematics, Music theory and Composition. He taught at the high school and college level throughout his career. After retiring from the Air Force, Richard moved back to Spokane where he taught Jazz composition, Music theory and Saxophone at Whitworth and Eastern Washington Universities. A consummate jazz musician Richard performed well into his 80’s. In 2005, the Hubbard “Best Saxophone Section” Award with the Jazz Dialogue was created in his name at EWU. Military Honors will be held at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 11:15 a.m.
