William "Bill" Murdock McKay

November 24, 1932 — June 18, 2017

WILLIAM MURDOCK MCKAY DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON FATHER’S DAY, JUNE 18, 2017. BORN IN 1932 IN SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, BILL SPENT MOST SUMMERS OF HIS YOUTH IN WHITE ROCK, B.C. WITH HIS GRANDPARENTS AND AUNT WHERE HE SWAM COMPETITIVELY AND WON MANY TROPHIES. HE SERVED IN THE NAVY AND ATTENDED GONZAGA UNIVERSITY AND BANKING SCHOOL BEFORE STARTING HIS CAREER AT OLD NATIONAL BANK. HIS CAREER BEGAN PRINTING THRIFTY CHECKS, AFTER WHICH, HE BECAME A COMMERCIAL LOAN OFFICER, AND EVENTUALLY, VICE PRESIDENT BEFORE HIS RETIREMENT IN 1991. HE WAS ALSO PRESIDENT OF THE SPOKANE COUNTRY CLUB. BILL DEFINED HIS PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AT THE BANK AS ADVOCATING FOR HIS CUSTOMERS, WHO NOT ONLY WENT ON TO GREAT SUCCESS, BUT ALSO REMAINED LIFE LONG FRIENDS. HE MARRIED HIS WIFE, MARY, IN AUGUST 1978 AND WITH THAT ADDED 4 MORE CHILDREN (ALONG WITH HIS 2) TO HIS FAMILY. THE TWO TRAVELED, GOLFED, FISHED AND LAUGHED FOR ALMOST 39 YEARS. HE WOULD ALWAYS SAY THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO HIM WAS MARRYING MARY. WHEN BILL RETIRED FROM BANKING, HIS DAYS WERE CONSUMED WITH FISHING ON LAKE PEND ORIELLE AND LATER LOON LAKE, GOLFING, AND PLAYING GIN RUMMY WITH HIS BUDDIES, ALL WHICH HE REFERRED TO AS “GOING TO THE OFFICE” AND HE CLAIMED TO NEVER REALLY GET A DAY OFF. HE SHARED HIS LOVE OF FISHING WITH HIS CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN OVER THE YEARS. HE WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR HIS EASY DEMEANOR, SENSE OF HUMOR, TEASING AND HEARTY LAUGH. IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO REMEMBER BILL WITHOUT A FISHING POLE IN HAND. BILL WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS FIRST WIFE, AND HIS PARENTS LAWRENCE (MAC) AND VERA MCKAY. SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, MARY (MCCAULEY) MCKAY, DAUGHTERS LORELEI ZICKLER, KAY KERSEY, BARBARA HEISLER AND SON JOHN MCKAY ALONG WITH 6 GRANDCHILDREN AND 3 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, THE FAMILY ASKS THAT DONATIONS BE MADE TO A CHARITY OF YOUR OWN CHOICE. A SMALL PRIVATE CELEBRATION WILL BE HELD IN HIS HONOR.
