Jean L. "LYNN" Metzen

November 14, 1938 — December 18, 2009

METZEN, Jean Lynette “Lynn” (Freeland)- Passed away 12/18/2009 and is finally pain free. Born in Butte, Montana, she moved to Spokane in her early youth. She graduated in 1957 from North Central H.S. in Spokane and moved shortly thereafter to Sacramento, California, where she met and married Carl R. “Bud” Smith. They moved countless times, experiencing the flavors of numerous cities and states, countries and cultures, all with good humor, sharp wit, and ageless class. Together they raised three children and ultimately retired from the USAF to the Spokane area in 1977. In 1982, she married Thomas J. “T.J.” Metzen who strove diligently to provide a safe haven while seeing to her every need. T.J. undertook the most zealous care for Mom -- right up to her last hour -- for which she was ever grateful. Lynn was a warm, gregarious hostess who enjoyed meeting family and friends for loud, spirited, quick-witted discussions about any and all subjects, not the least of which would be current events. Her opinions could never be considered indifferent or mild. She played a mean game of bridge and charades when she was younger, and a mischievous, cross-talking game of pinochle in her later years. Her warmth and humor will be greatly missed. Lynn is survived by her husband T.J., former husband Buddy, and children: Melanie Smith of Seattle; Melissa (Don) Stever of San Luis Obispo, California; Matthew (Jill) Smith of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; grandchildren, Alexander and Miranda; sisters, Bobbi (John) Blessent, and Patti McCasland. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Pete Leroy “Roy” and Peggy (Meisner) Freeland, and sisters, Peggy Chakarian and Sandra “Sandi” McDermott. RIPLINGER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY in charge of cremation. A Celebration of Lynn’s life will take place in the Spring. Donations may be made to Providence VNA Home Health.
