Lois Ulmer died peacefully at home on Friday, April 2, 2010 after a brief illness. She was the beloved mother of seven children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Lois Pate was born in Gonzales, Texas on November 4, 1924 and after graduating from Gonzales High School, she went to work in the National Youth Administration. She supported the war effort during WW II as an aircraft worker at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas. It was there she met and fell in love with a young Navy man, John C. Ulmer. Lois and Johnny married in Corpus Christi in 1944. Lois and Johnny eventually moved to the Spokane area in 1947 and raised all their children here. In addition to being a homemaker, Lois worked for many years for the Spokane District 81 Food Service. Lois and Johnny enjoyed 53 years of marriage until Johnny died in 1997. Lois was generous and humble and was devoted to living in the way of Jesus Christ. She taught all her children and grandchildren through her own life’s example how important it is to love and serve our neighbors. She was a dedicated member of Hillyard Baptist Church where her constant support, presence, and service were counted on for 60 years. Lois is survived by her seven children, Jeanie Kuraitis (John), Pamela Baldwin (Richard), Ronald Ulmer (Rhonda), Glenda Ulmer, Jessica Ulmer, Alan Ulmer (Lori), and Marsha Ulmer. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Gene Baldwin, Dina Johnson, Ashley Ulmer, Justin Ulmer, Auston Ulmer, Hanna Kuraitis and Lydia Grams. Lois also has two surviving sisters in Corpus Christi, Texas, Clarice Marek, and Pat Simmons. She was preceded in death by her sister Doris LePori and her brother Aubrey Jackson Pate. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 11 AM at Hillyard Baptist Church. Memorial gifts can be made in Lois’ name to Hillyard Baptist Church, 2121 E.
