Carmen R. Stewart was one of nine children born to Thomas and Maria Stewart of San Antonio, Texas. He married Leila Headings in 1954 and they moved to Cheney area on their honey - moon. He passed away February 17, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Leila; daughter Margaret Ann Stewart; grandson Aaron (Colleen) and great granddaughter Taylor; by his son, Michael (Lisa) and grandson Stephen of New Jersey; by one brother, Jesse, of California; and sister, Ruth, of Texas; by several nieces and nephews in Texas and California. He was educated in San Antonio and served in the US Navy for ten years from 1942 to 1952. He worked in meat markets in Houston and Spokane, then as a Federal Meat Inspector in Spokane. Finally, he owned and operated his own custom butchering business until his retirement in the mid 1990’s at the age of 81. His hobbies included Ballroom dancing, going on cruises, traveling and gardening. He had a lifelong interest in education and served on the Cheney School Board for a period of time. His funeral will be held at RIPLINGER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 4305 N. Division, Spokane, WA, Wednesday, June 23rd, at 1:00 pm.
