Layne D. Johnson

Layne Durand Johnson was born March 6, 1924 to Eva & Durward Johnson in Fairmont North Dakota. He came to Spokane in September 1936 with his parents and his brothers. Layne graduated from West Valley High School in 1943. After meeting Margaret Johnson in 1939 (71 years!) they married on March 11, 1944. Layne served in the U.S. Army Amphibious Engineers Corp. from April 1943 to January 1946. As a gunner on a landing craft he made 7 hot landings in the Pacific war zone ending in Japan at war’s end. Layne was a carpenter and was a specialist in finish work. He built and finished many fine buildings and homes throughout the Spokane area. He took great pride in his craftsmanship, work ethic and honesty. After working a full day on the job, Layne would work, after hours, building his family a new house. He took great pride in building each of his four children a home. Layne’s favorite hobbies were Bird Hunting, Fishing and watching his children’s athletic endeavors. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Jacqueline Manfred (Dick) and sons Terry (Suzie- deceased), Kevin, and Mark (Machelle) Johnson all of Spokane. His grandchildren Ryan Manfred of San Diego, Courtney Manfred of Las Vegas, Cassie, Lexi and Max of Spokane and Chase LaLone(Kaisha) of Portland Oregon. A special nephew Jerry Johnson (Jacque) and niece Karen Stevens (Dennis). He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Theron, Ronald, and Daryl Johnson. Services will be at St. Paschals Church on Saturday November 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at St. Paschals School from 12:00 -2:00 p.m. Donations in memory of Layne can be made to St. Paschals Church or Spokane Hospice.
