Merlin "Buck" Buchanan, age 77, was surrounded by family when he passed away at home January 12, 2025. Merlin was born in Spokane, WA on January 3, 1948 to Laurence and Naomi (Greenwood) Buchanan. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1966. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy for four years.
While in the navy he served as captain of a river patrol boat (Brown Water Navy), which made their way deep inland surrounded on both sides by impenetrable jungle. He served 13 months on the rivers. He was stationed for a while on the cruiser, the USS Chicago and an aircraft carrier the Constellation. After his Military Service he attended College at Wenatchee Valley College and Washington State University. Graduating in 1974 from WSU with a degree in Criminal Justice.
After graduation he began his career as a deputy U.S. Marshal in Beaumont Texas. After 18 months in Beaumont, he transferred to the Marshal Service office in Spokane. He remained at the Spokane office until his retirement as acting US Marshal in 2002.
Merlin joined the El Katif Shriners in 1989. He became a very active member attending numerous parades driving the calliope. He was a member of several Units and Clubs. He served on the board of directors becoming Potentate in 2013. He was also the recorder. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Spokane #34.
Merlin was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest daughter Erin Wren. He is survived by his wife, Jodie, of 54 years, Sons: Scott (Erin), Brian (Natalie), and Daughter Heather (Genaro), two brothers, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Burial services will be scheduled in the spring.
