Darlene Newman

December 5, 1931 — January 29, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Darlene D. Newman, who departed this life on January 29, 2025, at the age of 93 surrounded by her family at the time of her passing. Born on December 5, 1931, in Geddes, South Dakota, she was the cherished daughter of Robert and Hazel Odeen.

Darlene built a life centered around love, family, and friendship. She married Rodney Newman, with whom she shared 26 years of love and devotion before his passing in 1976. Together, they raised four children: Kathie (George) Cunningham, Vickie (Michael) Ruthven, Michael (Shelley)Newman, and Patrick (Yvonne) Newman. Her legacy continued through her cherished grandchildren: Kellie, Cory, Mistie, Sarah, Patrick, Lyndsey, Amy, Shane, Nate, Nick, and Nolan, as well as 25 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephew's and married partners of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Harold, Donald and Joan. along with her husband Rodney (1976) her son Patrick (2023), her life partner Ike McMullen (1996), and sons-in-law George Cunningham (2018) and Michael Ruthven (2008).

Darlene began working for the phone company in 1963 in Pierre, South Dakota, and continued her career after moving to Spokane, Washington, in 1966. She loved to get together with her friends to play either cards or Farkle. She was an avid bowler and belonged to several leagues with her friends. Bowling is where she met her beloved Ike in 1978, after the death of her husband. She retired in February 1989, allowing her to spend more time doing what she loved with Ike, like bowling together and traveling. She also enjoyed her monthly luncheons with the Red Hat Ladies.

She will always be remembered for her strength, generosity, kindness, and humor-qualities that defined her and left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was the heart of her family, and her unwavering love and warmth will be dearly missed.

A viewing will be held on February 11th from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with an additional viewing on February 12th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 PM, followed by her funeral service at 12:00 PM at Riplinger Funeral Home.
