Jerry Lou Hawkins

December 21, 1920 — August 25, 2021

Jerry Lou Hawkins (nee Curtis) Age 100 Jerry Lou was born Dec. 21, 1920 and got her wish to fall asleep and not wake up on August 25, 2021. Jerry Lou was the only child born to Louis Curtis and Jessamine Morrison Curtis in Pullman, WA. She married Robert R. Hawkins in 1961. Bob predeceased her in 2000. His sister Shirlee Wold survives. His other sister, Maxine Bigelow, predeceased. Although she never had children, Jerry Lou was the extra mom/auntie for the children of her friends, many of whom were able to be with her in person or by phone during the last weeks of her life. Jerry Lou attended State College of Washington (now WSU) and ultimately graduated from Oregon State Agricultural College (now OSU). She was a proud Kappa (Kappa Kappa Gamma). She worked in clerical positions, her favorite being Eastman Kodak in Palo Alto. Jerry Lou was an example how to live 100 years with grace and dignity and she died with that same grace and dignity. She was grateful for each day she lived and appreciated and was interested in every person she met. She always asked for a person’s name, made a point to remembered it, and “please” and “thank-you” were her most common words. She said it didn’t make sense to be negative or grumpy because it didn’t make anything better. Jerry Lou’s circle of friends would like to thank Hospice House South staff and volunteers for their kind and compassionate care for our friend. And especially for keeping the chocolate ice cream coming! At Jerry Lou’s request there will be no formal memorial service. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
