Opal Maxine Abitz

ABITZ, Opal Maxine (Rand) (Age 92) – Passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021. Opal was born February 10, 1929 in Strang, Nebraska to Glen D. and Gladys M. (Shults) Rand. She was a longtime resident of Spokane, WA; a member of the Inland Empire Gardeners and Manito Garden Club; and a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She was a cashier (retired) for the State of Washington Office of Support Enforcement. For 10 years she was secretary for the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). She was preceded in the death by her husband, Ernest L. Abitz; and sister, Wilma M. (Rand) Vannurden. Opal is survived by stepdaughter, Madelynn Mercer; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren all of Rainier, WA; cousins, Karen (Shults) Chase, Duane (Patricia) Shults, JoAnn Shults and Rolland Shults all of Richland, WA; niece, Sharon (Vannurden) King of Spokane; nephew, Mark (Janna) Vannurden of Mesa, AZ; brother-in-law, Harold Vannurden; and great nephew, Eric (Liese) Kingson all of Spokane; and numerous extended family and friends. Opal’s family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff at Fieldstone Memory Care and Hospice of Spokane for taking such wonderful care of Opal. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens, Spokane, WA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ASPCA or the Humane Society.
